Bringing the World to Pittsburgh
Shining a Spotlight on Museum Collections
Andrew Carnegie vowed to “bring the world to Pittsburgh” when he founded the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in 1896. As the second installation of the successful The Stories We Keep exhibition series, Bringing the World to Pittsburgh tells the stories of why and how the museum has collected objects and specimens from around the world while examining the use of collections for scientific research. My goal was to evolve the visual identity that I had previously developed for the exhibition series and bring visual order to the chaotic narrative of multiple stories and varying collections. This involved expanding the color palette and injecting vibrant color treatments into historic images to bridge the gap between past and present museum collection expeditions.
Interactives
The exhibit is rich in multiple interactive elements to be enjoyed by visitors of all ages and abilities. Visitors can sort collection objects, open crates containing rare fossils, listen to sound bytes from the museum’s podcast, and even write about their own collections – all supported by thoughtful design.
