In September of 2013, the Bucco's outfielder put the call out for someone to design his Facebook cover photo. I typically don't go for design contests, but with a love for Pirates baseball and some extra time on my hands I decided to give it a shot.
With a little over 24 hours to complete the project, I had to work quickly and identify a style that I could execute within that time frame. The concept I had in mind was a Sheppard Fairey-esque street art illustration that would allow me to use simple shapes and a minimal color palette.
Using a photo reference, I identified the shadows, midtones, and highlights and assigned them colors from the Pirate's color scheme. Once the main illustration was complete, I began work on the background in Photoshop using baseball cards, spray paint brushes, and elements that I had created.
Andrew selected my illustration as his favorite and gave me an autographed Sports Illustrated magazine. It turned out to be a good day for the both of us.
